Elementary Learning: Week at a Glance

In the Appleton Area School District, our classrooms combine strong academics with hands-on learning, creativity, and meaningful friendships, helping students feel excited to learn each day.

Students explore meaningful ideas through literacy, solve real-world problems in math, investigate scientific questions, and learn about their communities and the world around them. Our dedicated educators create engaging learning experiences that help every student grow and develop a lifelong love of learning, while partnering with families to create opportunities for you to engage in the school community.

Below are the content areas your child will experience:

Literacy (Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening)

Students participate in a daily literacy block using Wit & Wisdom, a knowledge-building English Language Arts program. Through engaging texts and meaningful topics, students develop skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

In early grades, students also receive structured phonics instruction using UFLI Foundations, which helps them develop strong decoding, spelling, and reading fluency skills.

Mathematics

Students learn math every day using Math Expressions. Lessons focus on developing number sense, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning.

Science

Students engage in Mystery Science to investigate scientific questions through hands-on activities, observations, and discussions that encourage curiosity and critical thinking.

Social Studies

Social studies instruction is organized through Inquiry Journeys. Students explore communities, history, geography, and civic responsibility through inquiry, discussion, and projects.

Social-Emotional Learning

Students regularly practice skills that support emotional well-being and positive relationships. These lessons help students develop empathy, communication skills, and responsible decision-making.

Speciality Classes

Throughout the week, students participate in additional courses such as Art, Music, Physical Education, STEM, and Library/Media.

Recess and Wellness

Students have two daily recesses and scheduled lunch periods to support physical activity, social interaction, and overall well-being.

Together, these experiences create a well-rounded elementary program where students grow academically, socially, and emotionally while developing a lifelong love of learning.
